DISCC - The Duke Information System for Cardiovascular Care

The DISCC system traces its roots back to 1969 with the establishment of the Duke DataBank and the beginning of the electronic capture of data describing cardiology and cardiac surgery patients.

Effective July 2001, the DISCC group was brought under the auspices of the Heart Center to crystallize the focus of DISCC on the clinical needs of the Heart Center. The second goal with this administrative change was to tighten the integration of the data collection process with the delivery of clinical care for all parties internal and external to the Heart Center (clinical care, quality improvement, clinical research).

Statement of Focus: First, the DISCC Group will be responsible for the development, deployment, maintenance, and  management of the front-end interfaces and the back-end databases for the documentation and reporting of adult non-invasive, invasive, interventional, and surgical cardiac procedures performed in the Duke Heart Center, and for the long-term follow-up of patients undergoing procedures in the Duke Heart Center. Second the DISCC Group will be responsible for the systems integration of vendor-provided database applications for solutions that are not part of the core competency described above.

In addition to the Duke Heart Center, DISCC provides services and support to the cardiology and cardiothoracic services at the Durham VA Medical Center, Southeastern Regional Medical Center (Lumberton), Alamance Regional, Danville Regional, the Duke Mobile cardiac cath laboratories, and Raleigh Community Hospital.

Core projects: rewrite the report generator / remove the report generator from the DISCC application, converting the report generator from MS Word to XML and .pdf formats; rewrite of the DISCC suite of applications to use a Web-based interface generation engine to simplify application development, maintenance, and documentation; rewrite of the cardiac cath lab inventory management system.

Systems integration projects: invasive and interventional peripheral vascular disease reports; electrophysiology reports; thoracic surgery reports.
